Ronald Lutz
Success Story
Ronald Lutz, a 63-year-old retired farmer from Greeley, Colorado, enjoys fishing and spending time with his family.
Ronald’s health journey took a serious turn when he underwent surgery to have a spinal cord stimulator placed to help manage chronic back pain. Unfortunately, he developed a severe infection in his spine, which required surgery to remove the infection and relieve pressure on his spinal cord. After surgery, the hospital team recommended continued critical and long-term acute care at Northern Colorado Long Term Acute Hospital (NCLTAH).
Upon arrival at NCLTAH, Ronald couldn’t walk or take care of himself without full assistance. Under the guidance of the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team, he focused on rebuilding strength, increasing endurance, and regaining independence with daily activities. Physical therapy focused on helping him with standing, transferring, and walking again using a front-wheeled walker. Occupational therapy worked with him on essential daily tasks such as dressing, toileting, and showering.
“God helped me through,” Ronald says. “The staff is amazing, polite, and helpful. The doctors are great, and the therapy really pushes you to do your best.”
After 3 months, Ronald can walk short distances with help. He is being transferred to Northern Colorado Rehabilitation Hospital (NCRH) for continued specialized rehabilitation. His goal is to eventually return home and reconnect with his dad, family, and friends.
“I can’t wait to get back to driving,” he says. “Right before my surgery, I got a Can-Am 1000 Turbo (a UTV), and I’m looking forward to doing some off-roading.”
